Let’s talk about making money

Sure! We live in the cult of selfishness, so we should talk about making money. I know that we could talk about a new cultural approach and I am also aware of the ethical connotations rooted in the philosophy of free software, but the concept of free programmer should not be the same as the concept of free software programmer. Free software industry has proved to be efficient, not for the programmer but for companies. Stallman himself argues in his book that a free software programmer earn significantly less than a developer of proprietary software.

Our philosophy aims to appeal to voluntary cooperation, but not in an altruistic or vocational way, no. The free programmer should act on economic interest.

I would like to pose a hypothetical case. Suppose I am the owner of a consulting company called “FP Consulting” and I intend to establish a collaborative environment. I own €150,000 and I spend €30,000 in a cluster of servers, so that I can hire 10 programmers for a year with a salary of €12,000 for each of them. After a year the project is a success and my client paid €650,000, so skillfully I will win €500,000 through the exploitation of my faithful servants. So the amount that each of these programmers have lost is around the €50,000. Do you know many programmers who earn € 62,000 per year? So it is clear that it is worth every one of these developers contribute with €3,000 and his volunteer work for a year, right?

I am not the owner of any company, nor do I pretend. I know that thanks to advertising could be reached to create an empire like Google or Facebook, but the creativity does not leads to this situation. Luck does it. Any other search engine could have taken the place of Google and any other social network could have replaced Facebook. Now you’re probably thinking to appropriate the idea, you assemble the company and get rich. But the company is based precisely to avoid this, so that your interest is the same as mine and that is why you must collaborate with the same or greater effort.

If you currently win €30.000 think of win €60.000. If you are unemployed think of having a job. If you win €12.000 think of win €40.000. If you win €50.000 think of win €170.000. Must be a completely free market, where your compensation depends on your will, your work and your creativity. Collaborate.
